AKC Trick Dog is a set of titles your dog can earn by performing tricks for an approved evaluator. It is a friendly way to keep training fun, build focus, and give you both something to work toward.

Tricks are observed by an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator. Emily is one, so she can watch your dog’s tricks and sign off on the title application.

Titles are earned in order, starting with Novice.

• Novice Trick Dog (TKN): 10 tricks from the Novice list. A dog with a Canine Good Citizen on record needs only 5.
• Intermediate Trick Dog (TKI): the Novice title plus 10 Intermediate tricks.
• Advanced Trick Dog (TKA): the Intermediate title plus 10 tricks from the Advanced list.
• Trick Dog Performer (TKP): a short routine of at least 10 tricks, with at least 3 using props.
• Trick Dog Elite Performer (TKE): a routine with a story or script and at least 5 props.

Trick training works for puppies, adult dogs, and seniors, and for purebred and mixed-breed dogs alike. Many Novice tricks are things your dog may already know, such as sit, down, shake, or spin.

It is also a good option for dogs who need indoor activities, dogs building confidence, and families who want a project the kids can help with.

Pick tricks your dog enjoys and practice in short sessions. Emily can help you choose from the AKC lists, teach new tricks with marker or clicker training, and tidy up the ones your dog nearly has.

If your dog is also working toward a Canine Good Citizen, the two fit together well: a CGC counts as five of the ten Novice tricks.
